Asclepius Beanie
Read the Story: Or feel free to skip straight to the pattern. It won’t hurt my feelings! Where would we be without the healers in our lives? Doctors, nurses, paramedics, even just a comforting hand of a parent all bring the power of healing to the world. Throughout history healers have been revered for their ability to somehow magically rid us of disease. We’ve passed down stories of their miraculous deeds and even incorporated their symbols into our everyday lives. The Rod o

Boughs of Yggdrasil Scarf
Read the Story: Or feel free to skip straight to the pattern. It won’t hurt my feelings! This scarf is a companion to my original “ Roots of Yggdrasil ” pattern. Inspired by my mixed Norse and Gaelic heritage, I incorporate a lot of cable work to represent Nordic and Celtic symbols. The original “Roots” pattern continues within this “Boughs” pattern by starting with a “trunk” made of three braided cables with a total of nine strands (three roots of Yggdrasil and nine worlds).

Wind Sweater Collection Read the Story: Or feel free to skip straight to the pattern. It won’t hurt my feelings! In ancient times, the changing of seasons often coincided with “shifts” in the winds - a change in direction, temperature, moisture, all of which heralded a new time of the year and a continuation of the cycle of life. Naturally, these winds were personified as deities with attributes fitting their associated season, so I have designed a collection of crocheted swe

Runic Tunic (Main Instructions)
Read the Story: Or feel free to skip straight to the pattern. It won’t hurt my feelings! I have always been fascinated by ancient Germanic people and the mysterious runes with which they recorded their language. But unlike the letters we use today, runes were more than just a tool for recording sounds - they were symbols of magic and power, not to be taken lightly. Pagans and Christians alike viewed them with both reverence and fear. I have also always felt something similarl

Runic Tunic (Rune Instructions)
Due to limits on blog post sizes, I had to create a separate post for the individual Rune Instructions. For the free Runic Tunic instructions, check out the first blog post here . I used the website https://omniglot.com/writing/futhorc.htm as my source for rune meanings and sounds, but rune lists are inconsistent as they were never standardized. As such, there can be differences between what I list here and what you may find in other sources. Not all sounds in Old English an

Roots of Yggdrasil Scarf
Read the Story: Or feel free to skip straight to the pattern. It won’t hurt my feelings! Like many Americans, I have a mixed ancestry. I’ve always been fascinated by my heritage and have learned a lot about my family. Two lineages that have stood out especially were my Scots-Irish and Scandinavian bloodlines. I always viewed these as two separate sets of ancestors, but I learned later in life how intertwined the stories of the Celts and the Norse are. Vikings from Scandinavia

Red Zinfandel Beanie
Read the Story: Or feel free to skip straight to the pattern. It won’t hurt my feelings! I don’t know about you, but I really love wine - particularly full-bodied red wines. When I saw the deep, rich purple color of this yarn, I just knew I had to make a wine-inspired crocheted item. Thus was born the idea for the Red Zinfandel beanie. I wanted to create a hat that looked like a series of grapevines draping around the head. Using front post stitches and clusters, I was able t

Saxon Skies Pullover
We all have to start somewhere, and for me it was the Saxon Skies Pullover, my very first sweater design. I learned a lot about what to do (and especially what NOT to do) when it comes to designing a crocheted sweater, so while I did my best to make it a good pattern, it definitely has the classic "first attempt" aura about it. As such, I decided to make it a free pattern! Rather than write an entire blog post, however, I've just provided download links below for each of the

Clubs & Diamonds Scarf
Read the Story: Or feel free to skip straight to the pattern. It won’t hurt my feelings! This scarf is designed to use two of the basic stitches in crochet: single crochet and double crochet. I developed this pattern as a project for students learning these basic crochet stitches at a local yarn shop–A Chick That Knitz–where I would attend knit night each week. I wanted to create something that looked hard but would be surprisingly easy. With simple front-post stitches and cl
