When I made the “Perfect Squares Square” last year for MooglyCAL 2024, I was inspired to make this year’s square with yet another math-inspired theme.
I present to you the “Seven Deadly Sines Square” – a play on words that incorporates both math and the stitches used in this square.
How are these related? To start, this pattern uses six stitches – single, half double, double, treble, double treble, and triple treble crochet. But wait? Where does the seventh come in? Why that would be the pride that you’ll experience when you finish this piece! Either that or you could count the chain stitches at the beginning as the seventh, but I think the pride thing is far more suitable.
Oh, and there happens to be seven total stripes, but that might just be a coincidence and not at all intentional!
As far as the math side of things, “sine” is one of the foundational ratios in trigonometry – the study of the relationships between angles and sides in triangles. When extended to include the rotational nature of angles using a unit circle on a coordinate plane, the sine function produces a very pleasing wave pattern. This regularity is used to describe anything that moves in cycles – seasons, holidays, even life itself – and it’s especially good at representing the meditative practice of crochet.
So ride those seven deadly sine waves as you craft this simple square!
